Second place: Mexico Restaurant
Third Place: Don’t Look Back
Let’s be real here, Mexican is the new fast food, cheap and filling. Virginia Beach chain Plaza Azteca won our readers’ hearts and stomachs again with shrimp nachos, enchiladas San Miguel and a host of other takes on beef, chicken, seafood, beans and rice. And add cheese, lots of cheese. With four local locations, you’re never far from a fix of tableside guacamole and an obscenely sized margarita. Local chain Mexico is celebrating its 25th anniversary, so it must be doing something right. It has six outposts and the ability to serve food within what feels like seconds of ordering. Depending on your take, this can be a good or bad thing. Don’t Look Back, with its single location in Carytown, boasts the most creativity of the three, with chicken-skin tacos selling out almost as soon as they’re listed on the blackboard and the Frito pie maintaining its status as the cheapest and best meal in a bag in town.
