Second Place: Dominion Riverrock
Third Place: Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont
You don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind and you don't mess around with the Richmond Folk Festival. The four-day party, which is in dire need of a nickname, trumps this category through sheer numbers involved, dominating the local music festival circuit. Last year saw perfect weather and more than 200,000 people flocking to the free event of eclectic music, food and crafts. It drew record main stage crowds for such acts as Roseanne Cash, with attendees chipping in around $107,000 to the wandering bucket brigade. A festival with some new buzz, Dominion Riverrock, uses the same locale but feels more like an extreme sports event with some great bands tacked on: Toots and the Maytals played at it last weekend. Meanwhile, the Richmond Jazz Festival at Maymont continues to find its footing as one of the up-and-coming jazz parties on the East Coast — make that smooth jazz parties.
