Shannon Breeding hurt his back moving bariatric beds for seriously obese people. It happened in Virginia Beach in 2004. These are beds that weigh 350 pounds and more — he recalls one patient in Richmond, a 19-year-old, who weighed 825 pounds — and he’s lucky he didn’t break in half. Hunched over, he visited a chiropractor and was transfixed. He moved to Davenport, Iowa, home of Palmer College of Chiropractic, or what Breeding calls “the fountainhead” of chiropractic care. He graduated in 2008, moved back to the Richmond area and set up shop. Breeding sees a wide range of patients for injuries and other ailments — mostly sports-related. “I see patients as young as four months old to my oldest patient, who was 100 years old,” he says. Oh, and he’s the chiropractor for the Richmond Ballet — whose dancers are much easier to lift. Mark Guarino opened the Guarino Chiropractic Center in Innsbrook in 1987 and has taken care of professional athletes and actors on Broadway. David Berv is founder and owner of Back in Action Health Resource Center, which offers chiropractic care, acupuncture and massage therapy.
