A local nonprofit hopes to leverage Richmond’s unabated beer craze into a payoff for city public schools.

Building a Better RPS has several plans in the coming months that could raise thousands of dollars from area tipplers who can combine helping education with having good times.

It starts with a July 16 event called Raise a Pint, in which breweries will donate 50 cents from the cost of each pint sold. Four local breweries have signed on so far: Isley Brewing, Buskey Cider, Stone Brewing and Garden Grove Brewing Co.

Another sudsy event will be held July 24 featuring Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s Gingerbread Stout and Christmas Morning.

“The idea is to bring the holidays into the middle of the summer” when such brews are not generally available, says Alyse Marshall-Auernheimer of Building a Better RPS.

On Aug. 18, her group will team up with the Veil Brewing Co. and Ticket Spicket to benefit from sales of its India Pale Ale. Naturally, the event is titled, “IPA for RPS.”

More events are expected in September and October, along with an Oktoberfest celebration. Information is updated on at buildingrps.com.

The donations go to the Richmond Public Schools Education Foundation, which will distribute money among its projects at 45 public schools. Marshall-Auernheimer says a recent event involving 23 area restaurants has raised nearly $12,000 for the schools.
