Ah yes, I love hateful music. People have an annoying inclination to pooh-pooh negativity, but when all those black emotions are channeled effectively, hate can be a grand motivator in ways that peace, love and understanding can only dream of mustering. Back to Back, the Houston hardcore punk band headlining the bill at Strange Matter on Sunday, Aug. 18, makes new traditionalist hardcore that invokes the early 1980s underground aggressions of a myriad of little-known, barely musical hate-mongers from the era. Along with openers Unholy Thoughts and Hard Stripes, this revisionist night of blitzkrieg bop presented by Vinyl Conflict loses points for sitting on the shoulders of giants. But as the old saying goes, you don’t fix what ain’t broke. Strange Matter, 929 W. Grace St. Doors for the 18-and-older show open at 9 p.m. Admission is $5. strangematterrva.com.
