Baby Octopus: Too Smart to Eat

You might as well have substituted a photo of grilled baby dolphins in your review of the Magpie restaurant, as the picture of grilled baby octopus evoked a similar feeling of horror in this reader. These marvelous creatures are just beginning to be understood as having a profoundly unusual intelligence that may be unique on our planet (see a recent profile on the octopus, “Deep Intellect,” in Orion Magazine at orionmagazine.org). Although the Magpie’s intellect pales in comparison to that of the octopus, I hope the owners of Carver’s new eatery will have the good sense to remove baby octopus from the menu.
