And suddenly, poets were everywhere.
A new poetry series at Vis Arts.
It might seem strange to find new literary endeavors popping up in a place called the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, but its president, Jo Kennedy, assures us that everyone plays well together. So there should be no threat of rioting when the center launches its new reading series, “Fresh Ink,” showcasing the work of emerging national and international writers. “‘Fresh Ink,'” Kennedy says, “gives us yet another vehicle for encouraging and supporting the literary arts.”
First up are poets Carol Ann Davis and James Hoch. Both poets have been making noise in the small presses and both had books named finalist for Virginia Commonwealth University's Levis Reading Prize last year. Those books have since found publication. Davis (“Psalm,” Tupelo Press, 2007) believes that public readings give her “a way to meet other writers and enjoy that bit of kinship that emerges between writer and audience.” Hoch, who lists dishwasher and dockworker among his many former jobs, has published two books. Norton published “Miscreants” in 2007, and Silverfish Review Press did the honors in 2003 for “A Parade of Hands.” The latter won the Gerald Cable Award.
Kennedy is excited to launch the event at the Visual Arts Center, where, despite its name, “classes in creative writing are among the first to fill up with students who are eager to hone their craft.” The event will be held Thursday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, 1812 W. Main St.. Acclaimed poet Andrew Zawacki will read at the University of Richmond's Weinstein Hall as part of its English Department's writer's series at 8 p.m. Both readings are free and open to the public.
