Amanda Slater, 13

Home-schooled

Every Monday morning, Amanda volunteers at the Chickahominy YMCA, teaching two water-aerobics classes to participants with physical problems. She also volunteers for FISH, an eastern Henrico emergency help organization that responds to people who cannot pay their bills on time or don't have access to food.

An amateur radio operator, Amanda has earned her Technician Class license. She's an animal lover — she takes care of a dog, five rabbits and 20 chickens each day. And she's an entrepreneur. She breeds and sells rabbits and sells chicken eggs.

Amanda has been playing soccer and swimming competitively year-round since the age of 5. In 2003, she won four swimming medals, including a gold medal in the 50-meter breaststroke for the Greater Richmond Aquatic League championship.
