Adderall Observations Should Stir Attention

I have always admired Jack Lauterback's writing — style, content, pace and humor. "Speeding into the Night" is brilliant (Punch Drunk, April 13).

The topic of bars and drinking, and being drunk, doesn't appeal to me; my parents were alcoholics, and although I am now 72, the effects of that kind of childhood never fully go away. But as a retired high-school English and journalism teacher, and then as a medical educator and medical-library director, I am acutely interested in your column on Adderall. Your observations need wide dissemination.

I wouldn't tell anyone what to do. But the facts need to be put out there. It would be responsible if someone who has been giving you information on this doctor (who sprays out Adderall prescriptions indiscriminately) could report this man or woman to the Virginia Board of Medicine or to area hospitals. A crash, injury or death might be prevented if this woman called Susan came forward, as she has done to you, to licensing agencies.

Keep on being our Richmond sociologist and anthropologist, Jack. We need you.
