A Happy Democrat, Despite Predicament

Margaret Edds' Back Page column ("War of Attrition," Feb. 13) was perceptive and thorough in describing the Democratic Party predicament of a too-close race between Obama and Clinton. And yet ...

I find myself without regret. I am strangely happy, despite the Dems courting disaster by clinging to proportional formulas for delegate counts instead of the winner-take-all formula that papers over the divisions among Republicans. There is an excitement of ownership. On primary day here in Virginia, I felt for once as if I had a voice. Judging from the turnout, there were more Democrats than Republicans who felt that way.

Now for the hard part: settling on a nominee and avoiding disunity.
