A Guy Named Jasmine

Jasmine Guy was born in Boston, but the beloved character she portrayed on the sitcom "A Different World" for six seasons was a Richmond native. Whitley Gilbert's Southern drawl was a recurrent sound in America's living rooms in the 1980s while the program enjoyed the backdraft from ratings juggernaut "The Cosby Show." On May 4, Guy, sans faux accent, will host the Amani Peace Concert at Grace Baptist Church. The concert, featuring 80 singers, 40 harps and an African drummer, starts at 2:30 p.m. and benefits the Grace Baptist Institute in Liberia. Now, that's a different world. Tickets are $10-$20. 484-2187.
