The prior two comments allude to one of the complexities with this issue, and the author does the same, but right now there is no cheap alternative to coal as an energy source. The costs needed to bring a commensurate amount of megawatts online arising from renewable sources (wind, solar, biomass, etc.) would have us all paying much, much more for our power.

As long as we delay a long term plan to move away from fossil fuels we will continue to stay with what we have for now and the forseeable future. To move away from nuclear power and fossil fuels we need to have a plan that develops use of alternative sources of energy and gradually decreases the present sources of energy.
It will not be cheap, alternative energy is going to be costly.

Good article, though in the big picture, Virginia’s single largest contribution to global warming may be the way that Virginia allows coal to be shipped by CSX/Norfolk Southern trains. We are watching West Virginia mountains go to China for burning.

It's sad that the most energy-efficient manner of transportation (besides the bicycle) is being used to ship one of the dirtiest forms of fossil fuel energy.
