Essid's knowledgable reflections on our current gun debate are a refreshing and necessary change to the paranoid blather and sloganeering we hear from some - the printed response by Mr. Forrest is a good example. No doubt the U.S. Government has overstepped its bounds from time to time, but to characterize it as totalitarian or tyrannical is to become untethered from reality.

Captain, you have it down. Given what I've read about research and development of nanotech and drones in P.W. Singer's excellent book Wired for War, in a few years your guns would not even have to be taken.

The military and police would simply fly a drone, spray a cloud of nanobots on your property, and you'd lose consciousness only to awaken in custody.

Mr. Essid, I'm still hard-pressed to see where you're going with this. The final point of your Branch Davidians example seems to be thus: the Davidians were insufficiently armed to fight against the U.S. military, ergo assault weapons cannot fight against the U.S. military, ergo there's no need to have assault weapons.

DP, whomever fired the first shots at Waco, the Branch Davidians would not have had a chance, even if they'd had an armored division helping them. The Feds could have brought in three, plus a few squadrons of fighter bombers.

My point is larger: you cannot fight a modern military with assault weapons and those engaging in that fantasy need to study military history.

I would suggest that a big part of Americans' obsession with guns and shooting each other is connected to a perception of government as a threat to their way of life, and part of that has to do with a violent history and foreign policy by American government.

Look at countries like Sweden, where their citizens don't have that perception of government as a threat. They love their government as a solution to citizens' needs and problems.
