<![CDATA[We appreciate the comments of persons who clearly have familiarity with the existing system for homeless families. This family went through all the official channels and followed up on every lead Lashonda was given.

<![CDATA[Many of these comments are missing the point of the article, which is that it's extremely easy for one adverse event to knock a previously low-income but stable family to the brink of homelessness, and that a stronger safety net would effectively address the specific situations which cause people just above extreme poverty. Asking "What makes this family more special than the other families...?" reflects a mindset in which a) homelessness is normalized and b) it's okay to subject the very poor to a confusing maze of conditional assistance as well as c) believing the shelters are an appropriate or acceptable solution for anyone with a short-term housing need regardless of their specific circumstances.

<![CDATA[I'm confused about the sentence implying that the family doesn't have to explore homeless shelter as an option. Does anyone ever want to be homeless in a shelter?

<![CDATA[The process for getting a bed in an emergency shelter in Richmond is to first go to Homeless Point of Entry (HPE), which is located in the Conrad Center. There is usually a waiting list for shelter, so it makes sense that this family would have gone to HPE and then to Department of Social Services (DSS) to seek hotel assistance.

<![CDATA[This article seems sensationalist. There IS a front door for emergency services in an acute crisis: It's called Homeless Point of Entry, located at the Conrad Center at 1400 Oliver Hill Way.

<![CDATA[This is a hard luck story, and certainly no one would like to be in the shoes of this family. However, from the examples you give, it seems that the problem is not a lack of a safety net, but the inefficiency of the existing one (you list 5 options for this family to pursue, and in some cases has used).

<![CDATA[I certainly applaud the author on his neighbor-ness and sense of community. I totally agree with the main premise: "Working and low-income families have suffered from a triple whammy in recent decades: stagnant wages and vanishing jobs and the devastating impact of the 2008 recession."
