We certainly need to get the corporate folks on board, but just as important are the traffic engineers in the Department of Public Works. Mayor Jones' seemingly real commitment to improving bike-friendliness has not gotten very far because the people in charge of traffic in Richmond are not really committed to the idea of accommodating bicycles in a serious way.

Daniel, despite my skepticism about any real corporate commitment (see the first comment), I also applaud Mayor Jones for what he has done, and I appreciate your comment about how hopefully more lives will be saved. I support the event, but I want citizens to keep their eyes open and get accountability.

Understandably, infrastructures take time and money. Richmond HAS to make it happen as quickly as possible...
It's a short time frame with which to work, & I applaud Dwight Jones for nailing it down.

I like a lot of these ideas, but I'm concerned about the gushing exaltation and soapboxing that seems to be happening surrounding cycling. In order to truly become a more utilized part of our transportation infrastructure, we have to stop treating it like a kitschy, fun, dangerous novelty.

In addition to RideRichmond, there are other organizations that do group rides and clinics for new riders as well. RABA (Richmond Area Bike Association) has numerous rides every week (RABA.org), VCU has both a collegiate team AND cycling club for active students and alumni (find them on Facebook), Carytown Bikes does clinics/rides occasionally for new riders and 3Sports leads similar rides in conjunction with the Spin Mafia club.

Jack Berry of Venture Richmond has admitted that he was the primary objector to the bike lane and sidewalks on both for the new 2nd street connector-- in order to minimize the footprint of the road.

It's like this- Richmond and its citizens may publicly lobby for positive bicycle-friendly development, but behind the scenes the corporates are going to continue to do what they want and stick to 'business as usual'.
