Imagine for a moment what a reasonable "parent" would do if their college student/child kept demanding for more ... and more .... and more ..... money without explaining how the money would improve the student's academic performance and all the while refusing to do anything to demonstrate a willingness to spend wisely. Now, imagine how it might feel if your child called a press conference and tried to make you look ridiculous and selfish because you dared to ask the child for some cooperation and accountability.

I often think of the School Board as a college student that is fortunate enough to have his parents paying his way. They have a clear mutual objective but the student is responsible for setting the "policy" to achieve the objective.

Thank you for taking the time to read my BackPage opinion piece and for your comment. I don't know how you define "combative/confrontative" vs. "impassioned."

Mark – I would, and do, trust former politicians to write (and speak) fairly towards current politicians now sitting in their seats. Politicians do it all the time, and it is helpful to those of us that have not sat in their seats.

I'm not sure that a former (and recent) Richmond School Board member is the best person to write an opinion article on the current Richmond School Board. Their objectivity towards the current school board is questionable at best.

I applaud the Mayor's task force for not engaging in any further discussions with this lame duck board. The task force offered a road map to address these budget issues while the shortsighted proposals of the school board did nothing more than kick the can down the road.

With the next election fast approaching with a number of forums being scheduled, I hope the citizens of Richmond carefully scrutinize the rhetoric of these candidates who have thrown their hats into ring.
