Given the anger behind your words I can only wonder if perhaps you had something happen in your past to garner such a bitterness toward Artists outside of what is going on in Richmond. Tell me, what kind of Art have you sought out, as there is a wide variety that goes on here in Richmond, and most is not advertised.

I agree with you to a point, that this is not about Art but about
Tourism being showcased as 'being for the artist'. If this were about
bringing Art into Richmond, then Artists would be able to find
employment at these establishments that would free them from having to
pull a full time job, on top of a teaching job on top of the side work
of sharing their art with the community, which sadly is done many
times pro-bono or at rates that rarely constitute minimum wage.

The City is going to lose any semblance of middle class because instead of fixing things like schools and sidewalks, the corporate 1% bozos are forcing the City government to spend its money on opera houses and stadium studies.

An attempt to make sense of Art.
Unless you are engaged in Art is very difficult to understand the affect it has ones life. Therefore I will try to put the reason for being an artist, to provide an argument against the idea that the Arts is elitist or clique and to clear up the negative image that is being imposed on artists because of decisions not being made by artists who are working their butts off to make their community a better place to live and do not have the financial strength to make themselves heard or the budget for advertising their existence:

I am an artist.

      Mr.Mayor:
Who received the tax credits (public funds) from the Carpenter Center renovation?
Where are the hundreds of jobs projected in economic impact studies to be created by the project?
Why was SMG handed a no-bid contract to manage 3 publicly-subsidized facility and has no transparency reporting the use of tax payers' dollars?
Why have so many of Centerstage's "community partners" rarely performed in the facility?
Why are the financials details of the facilities' operations and programs "secret"?
Why is paid attendance never reported about events?
Why did VAPAF, now RPAC & Centerstage, waste millions of dollars on consultants and architects for an educational center in the basement of the Landmark that no arts group truly supported and was scrapped?
Why has Richmond contributed so many millions of tax payer dollars while the audiences seem to come from the surrounding counties who contribute nothing?

Having no reasonable answers to the above questions makes one question why Richmond will contribute $14 million plus tax credits plus interest to the Landmark project. This project benefits for-profit, out-of-town, companies far more than any locally-based not-for-profits that have community boards of directors.

If the schools, roads, sewers, health care facilities, etc. were in good working order, maybe Richmond should contribute but this is clearly not the case.
