      <![CDATA[Another often overlooked fact:  The nations of Europe outlawed slavery long before "freedom-loving" America did.<br>
<br>
The American Civil War was largely a bunch of poor men's sons fighting and dying for the cause of keeping rich men rich.<br>
<br>
A sad human joke. And nothing much to be proud of, except that God chose the right side to win.

      <![CDATA[For the many if not most in the north and for Lincoln in particular, slavery was not the reason for the war, preservation of the union was.<br>
<br>
But, for the south, one needs only to read the various proclamations of secession by the states to understand that slavery was virtually the only reason to leave the union.
