      <![CDATA[Greyhound, I appreciate the moderate and thoughtful tone of your post, though I think you are mistaken in many respects. I suspect, from internal evidence, that your sources are of the Catholic persuasion.<br>
<br>
For example, while I greatly admire Sir Thomas More - since my teens - there is no question that he was almost as heavy-handed as Henry VIII in the religious persecutions of the time.

      <![CDATA[The larger context of the church-state separation clause of the First Amendment--in fact it's intent--is to prohibit the Federal Government from establishing a "sanctioned" state religion/church entity. The ancestors of the founders experienced persecution on both sides of the religious equation depending on the affiliation of the reigning monarch.
