The symphony musicians collecting unemployment benefits during the summer:

- receive from the symphony organization all of their employment benefits, including health insurance, life insurance, and instrument insurance, during the summer;
- have the option to receive their contracted salary throughout the entire year, instead of over 38 weeks;
- have guaranteed positions under a labor agreement that applies year-round; and
- in many cases, leave Virginia during the summer for music festivals and gigs that often include payment for services as an independent contractor but do not constitute "employment" as currently defined by Virginia regulations.

It does seems valid to question whether or not they should be considered "unemployed" during the summer.

      Here's a thought. Let Director Fisk who pulls down nearly $107,000 a year take a pay cut and instead make parity with his orchestra members--that is, approximately $40,000 per year, thus saving the RSO about $67,000 dollars a year or nearly what the average benefits costs are.

      I'd bet you dollars to donuts that the first comment was by someone in symphony management, or a board member. a) They know a little too much about our schedule, as well as the vernacular that we use, and b) such a partially informed, derogatory, dismissive comment about musicians wouldn't likely come from anyone else.

First of all, it's absurd to gauge how hard someone works by simply counting how many hours they spend at the address at which they work.
