      <![CDATA[At the end of the Roman Empire, barbarians and thieves stripped cut stones and metal fixtures from buildings on the long sad march to the first dark age.<br>
<br>
At first, like now, the damage was repaired. <br>
<br>
But morally, politically, and financially bankrupt, Rome was eventually no longer able to stop the looters nor repair the damage as fast as it occurred.<br>
