Many thanks Chris.
The common misconception that bad design is harmless is both sad and dangerous.

Twelve lives were lost in Norfolk, four lost in Roanoke County due to fires in 1989.

“There’s absolutely no evidence that anyone has ever been harmed in any way by an unlicensed interior designer,” That quote is complete BS. The law was enacted in the first place after a very publicized event where a nursing home caught on fire because the "interior designer" was just some guys wife, who picked pretty fabrics and then then something caused a spark lo and behold, they were not fire retardant.

Regardless of how one feels in regards to the potential benefits or detriments of government regulation, it is clear to see one major concern in the details of this particular issue.

So long as Architecture regulation remains in place, the deregulation of interior design is a selective measure which excludes one active competitor from the marketplace in favor of another.

Any citizen - liberal, conservative, or libertarian by nature - must be concerned when the state actively stifles competition through changes in government.

Deregulating all professional services (which many may see as beneficial) is a far cry from selectively removing individual competitors to the benefit of those who remain.

That's one problem with unnecessary regulation: It's almost impossible to undo. As the last two comments show, those who get in under the regulatory system will then fight to the death, leveraging their status as "experts" in subjective, creative tasks, and dredging up any marginal, ridiculous excuses to protect their market privileges against newcomers.

The fact is, a piece of government-issued paper does not make you a good designer, nor prevent anyone from blocking (or not blocking) fire exits, nor keep debris out of your new hair braids.

In my opinion both interior design and architecture should be deregulated. As an architect, it is clear to me that the government has put unnecessary barriers up between young motivated professionals and their goals.

Thank you for the article raising the awareness of issues related to interior design deregulation in Virginia.

There are several items not highlighted in the article I hope to stress which have a major impact on this issue.

Regulation not only allows interior designers and architects to operate as partners and competitors in the marketplace, it also protects the welfare of the public by ensuring only qualified individuals make decisions impacting fire and life safety.

A 2009 study identified that interior designers have the greatest impact on these specific issues as they relate to the interior content of a building.
