From Times Dispatch:

A Richmond Circuit Court judge today upheld the convictions of three people arrested in March for being in Monroe Park after hours, ruling that the city’s ordinance was a reasonable restriction on their free-speech rights.

Judge Margaret P. Spencer found Joseph Loughman, Daniel Fargason and David Stubbs guilty of violating the city ordinance preventing people from being in a public park after dark, a misdemeanor that is not a jailable offense.

“What’s important is the judge upheld the constitutionality of an important provision of the city code,” said prosecutor Christopher Toepp. “The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and the Police Department worked together to see this through to the end.”
"What the Council has done, though, is try to block members of Occupy Richmond from expressing their views in public spaces, by evicting them from the park, and by treating them as real or potential criminals rather than citizens exercising the constitutional rights in public."

Occupy Richmond broke the law. What they are seemingly asking for, is special treatment (and from the opposite side of the spectrum, that is exactly what the corporations do- break the law and then expect special treatment).

I completely agree with the sentiments - and the specific points - in Scott Burger's draft resolution. It embodies what are indeed the ends of the Occupy movement, and it would be great if the Richmond City Council were to express its support for these goals.
