It's about time a critical mass of people were fused into Shockoe Bottom. I'm glad the current residents appreciate the character of the neighborhood and expect more from it.

I'm no fan of Sa'ad Elamin, but he did make one very insightful statement when as city councilman he meet with residents of Shockoe Bottom (this was when it first started becoming a residential area). He said, and I paraphrase,

You moved upstairs from a bar, what did you expect?

I agree with Laura Donahue's mindset- “If you are going to live in a city, noise comes with that."

I don't agree with people complaining and pressing lawsuits because they get tired of 'karoake' sounds blasting from the building below or beside them. If it bothers you that much, move.

Shockoe Bottom is not a "residential area for the wealthy". I'd say the rents there are a little higher than average, but it is mostly populated by young singles, students, professionals and empty nesters.

I miss watching sunsets on top of the abandoned Tobacco Row warehouses in the late 90's & early 00's, before catching a show at Alley Katz or the Canal Club. I can't afford to move in to one of the converted condos, so I guess that was my only chance.

A couple of things worth noting-

Historically, Shockoe Bottom, and particularly the northern parts of it, was where a lot of immigrants settled in Richmond and was known for its prostitution and gambling clubs.

You might read a lot of comments against a City noise ordinance, but in fact it makes a lot of sense, especially in more residential areas. Music meccas like Austin, TX and Seattle, WA have noise ordinances.

In the mid-90's, the scene in the bottom rivaled any in the country and the young professionals who live there now would have loved it; and the rents would be higher too, and gladly paid. Then non-owner-operated commercial burn-and-turn spots posted-up and changed the scene completely.
