There is no real planning in most counties: the mindset is let the developers do what they want, and the result is usually a mess. That's because conservatives, republicans, developers don't give a crap about the big picture, or long-term consequences; they're all about making a quick buck at the expense of others.

Gas prices are lower again, now, but the once-powerful lure of the mega-commute will be a curious memory in a few decades. I hope the suburban counties everywhere have a "Plan B" in the era of Peak Oil.

As a local resident impacted by the median, I definitely agree with the poor planning remarks. Now the traffic will be diverted to neighborhood roads that aren't designed to handle the already increasing traffic.

And this is why the region does NOT have a functional beltway, it spirals and if you want to go from Chesterfield on 288 to Hanover via 295. you have to get off and battle 64 (exactly the interstate congestion a bypass is supposed to ByPASS).

My solution - leaving Chesterfield - worked like a charm.
Frankly, the slow but steady demise of suburbia is one of the few things that gives me hope about this country.
