Like a previous commentor, my first thought in reading this well-crafted essay was the "debate" about climate change. Last March the members of the congress were presented with a letter signed by more than 2,000 prominent U.S. economists and scientists, including eight Nobel laureates, 32 National Academy of Sciences members, 11 MacArthur "genius award" winners, and three National Medal of Science recipients.

Part of the problem is that some folks, with presumably no formal education or training in the relevant disciplines of science (be it immunology or climatology), want so badly to have their "gut feeling" validated that they'll believe damn near any snippet from a blog or radio show which concurs with their views and hold it up as gospel truth.

These people profess themselves to be experts because they've read a few things and, in their great wisdom, they figure that makes them as much an expert in the field as someone who has dedicated their lives to its study.
