Thank you for a good article and for the good work that Ms. Scharf and the Peace Education Center does. The shooting in Tuscon can not be explained as the act of a madman, that is too simple.

Rick James is right and there's the additional consideration that we do not want to discourage people from voluntarily seeking mental health when they may feel that they need it.

If you know that, should you ask for counseling or treatment, you will lose for years various rights which you cherish, then you're less likely to seek treatment.

I know that this issue has been discussed repeatedly, and at length, in the two committees on Courts of Justice in the General Assembly.
"I think it's very justifiable to begin a conversation about the tenor of, in particular, certain conservative talk show and political personalities. … The tone of attack, and the level of aggression … I think could feed into those people in our society who are unstable."
Well, what Ms. Scharf "thinks" is irrelevant to reality.

One of the hard conversations that have yet to result from the VaTech and Arizona tragedies is a discussion of involuntary commitment and medical privacy. The knee jerk reaction to these types of tragedies is always a call for gun control and in the Arizona case a restriction of conservative opinion outlets.

It's disgusting that people on the left are attempting to use this as a means to silence their critics. The facts are that a guy whose politics have been described by a friend as "very left-wing" killed a moderate "blue dog" Democrat.
