This Michael R. character is hilarious. I am a proud supporter of the entertainment industry in Shockoe Bottom, but I also realize that the hip hop culture is destroying it.

This article misses one key point...and that is Shockoe Bottom is rapidly becoming a true mixed-use neighborhood with a significant residential presence. While nightclubs may have been an appropriate use for the neighborhood over the past 20 years, it is becoming less so with every new residential project that comes on-line.

the comment below is clearly some bitter white folks' idea of sarcasm, but the plain fact is that if city council could get away with creating a straight up walled-in ghetto for black folks to party in they would, just to say that they were "doing something about the problem," which is precisely what has put us in the predicament we are in now with the noise & club ordinances.

if you go anywhere else in the country, none of this shit is an issue, the police don't target certain business owners at the behest of others, et al... the part of the dancehall ordinance restricting promoters is just another nail in its constitutional coffin.

Before there was much of an 'entertainment district' in Shockoe Bottom, there were many nightclubs on Grace and Broad Streets in midtown. Those clubs formed the nucleus of a music scene that never quite got its due (but, yes, I remember ducking bullets when Ivory's let out).

Mr. Hairston's concept of an "Entertainment District" is a perfect solution. The flood wall already covers the south half of Shockoe Bottom, let's continue it in a circle around the Bottom and create an "enter at your own risk" district where the police never go and no crime reports will be accepted.

Perception is certainly an issue regarding the majority black clubs in the Bottom and the scene down there when these clubs let out... but perception is fueled in part by reality. The two murders that occurred as well as a YouTube video made by a Bottom resident documenting the after hours happenings in the street don't help things in the least.
