      <![CDATA[Great piece!<br><br>As one who runs a restaurant I can tell you that food prices from our vendors is on the rise but it is very hard to raise our retail prices with and 11% tax on the end of it. Think about it: If I list an item for $4.50, it comes to $5.00.

      <![CDATA[It's odd that despite all this hullabaloo, the one industry that is thriving in Richmond is the restaurant trade. We have hands down the most and the best independent restaurants in 7 counties.<br><br>Also Croaker's spot somehow managed to open a brand new restaurant in Manchester and are working on one out of state.<br><br>Something else to consider is that this is a tax that is often paid by non city residents, which lessens the overall tax burden for citizens.

      <![CDATA[What Don did not mention, is that the extra 1 percent meals tax is still being directed to the debt service (bond payments) on the performing arts center. Yes, that one-time taxpayer support is now long-term, taxpayer support.

      <![CDATA[Have the citizens of the City, who also pay to $500,000 per year to subsidize the facility and the vig on the $25 million construction bonds, gotten their free tickets yet?<br><br>This is a highly regressive tax hitting the poor, who may eat fast food and pay the tax unknowingly, much harder that the wealthier diners at the finer establishments. Are the poor given  tickets to go to the Ballet, Symphony or Opera?

      <![CDATA[Great column. <br><br>Its absolutely shameful how City leadership, both private and public, forced this tax increase into place despite protests from citizens.<br><br>The Richmond Renaissance members behind this, including John Sherman of Scott & Stringfellow, the Ukrops, and too many others, owe Richmond citizens and businesses a huge apology, and if they had any honor they would be working publicly to rescind this.<br><br>Like with the Wall Street scandals, these fat cats hope the public will be distracted by the debate on the latest shiny thing (locally, it seems to be the asinine push for building yet another white elephant Coliseum).<br><br>Keep on it Style!
