I am glad the District came to their senses. Although the law ALLOWS them to expel for drug possession with no age or grade limit, the law also allows for discretion on when to make a recommendation and expel in such a situation.

If this situation is reportedly accurately here, it is not only absurd and cruel, it is tantamount to child abuse.

The parent (or family member) gives the child a bag of pot and in so doing robs him of his innocence and trust in the adults in his world.

Reid School officials, either though laziness or ignorance, punish the child for the transgressions of the parent.

Failing to report a crime that has happened on RPS property, Reid School officials and Supt. Brandon may have broken Virginia law.

Anonymous @ 5:01 - Once again the RPS Superintendent has screwed up, the Board can do nothing about this issue as it is obvious the Board reports to the Superintendent and not the other way around. The police should have been contacted immediately after the school suspected the child had illegal drugs on school property.

I wonder why Richmond City Schools did not have this type of "zero-tolerance" for its employee that not only smoked marijuana, but abused alcohol, AND tested positive for cocaine. He taught third graders at Wickham Elementary School, then went on to teach in Henrico Schools where he mistreated students with special needs.

A parent is responsible for the actions of their juvenile children, regardless which family member gave the child the illegal drugs, the mother is responsible. It does not at all surprise me that the irresponsible school board and their ignorant attorney's could not figure this out, but I feel sorry for the child.
