To engage in a debate about the artistic merits of some or all graffiti is to totally ignore graffiti's one very damning premise: Graffiti is, almost exclusively, visual stuff that a person does to property that he or she does not OWN. Given this unequivocally faulty premise, there's no point in discussing artistic merit!

I agree with many of the comments below — the majority of these “artists” are not trying to communicate for the greater good, they are egotistical middle-class kids with inflated senses of entitlement and too much time on their hands. I am happy to see the police making a real effort to crack down on this crime, and look forward to seeing more of these kids scrubbing off their “art” off of our city's beautiful historic homes and buildings.

Speaking as a reformed graffiti writer, I find most graffiti banal and easily as offensive as billboards or advertising in general. Public art, publicly or privately funded, is a different vein in my opinion.

First of all, what Rick James stated - graffiti is ILLEGAL- "Every traditional and creditable definition of graffiti describes it an unauthorized or illegal rendering on a public or private space."
If you want to legitimize a public art form then don't call it graffiti.

Secondly, many graffiti vandals in inner city Richmond are tagging poorer historic neighborhoods- not billboards or suburban corporate campuses.
