I can see how comparing productions lead to conclusions about performances, direction and such. Having only seen the Mill "Altar Boyz" and laughing uproariously at the show, I came away with the impression that the whole point was not about wicked humor based on sexiness, but wicked humor based on parodying organized religion and its' associated judgments and values.

“Director Tom Width... loses some of the wicked humor of the show by downplaying the sexiness.”

You've got this backwards, Mary. Mr. Width gains everything by trusting his audience.

Here are some notes provided by the playwright: “...finding the real people within those roles is key.” “...do not succumb to the temptation to ‘camp it up.’” “Keep them true innocents... never bitchy or judgmental.” “Allow the audience to laugh from their observance of the Boyz' honest and sincere behavior...” “It's a fine line to walk- between parody and realism- but ultimately, it helps make the show funnier, more interesting and touching.” And there's more!

I have not seen either production of Altar Boyz here in Richmond, but I have seen the show 3 times in NYC and it is one of my favorites. I am confused by what you refer to as "sexiness."

When I heard the cast of Altar Boyz, I thought the choice of Ambler in the role of Juan was odd as well, I knew he could certainly pull if off, but thought, "Juan is supposed to be Latino." But then I saw the show and realized that nowhere in the book or score is it indicated that Juan is of Mexican descent, only that he was raised by nuns in Tijuana, Mexico, thereby acquiring a Mexican accent, no matter what his ethnicity.
