The First Friday Art Walk and the community that makes it happen are totally deserving as Style's Richmonder of the Year. What is more Richmond than a street-oriented event that combines a diverse crowd of both Richmonders and surrounding suburbanites with food, music and creative displays of art?

First of all, I'm happy to see the issue of gentrification discussed in Style Weekly. The issue requires a lot more serious attention from both entrepreneurs, who need to be more involved and aware of their role in the process of gentrification, and public officials who need to ratify the city ordinances and not look to developers and city planners to solve all the problems with free market solutions.

I felt like a man on an island when I started Metro Sound & Music downtown in 1991. It's great to see so many new faces finally visiting the area and hope that the City continues to embrace those individuals and businesses that have made it "cool" to go downtown again.

Artspace at 6 East Broad St was the first of the Shockoe Bottom art non-profits to move to Broad Street and begin the large crowd interest in Broad Street as an arts district. When Artspace moved to Plant Zero, art6 was created by some of the founders of Artspace to remain at 6 East Broad St. Our gallery, art6, as of now, is still operating, but under great stress of possible dissolution or of moving off-Broad.

Please come to First Fridays this weekwe'll be open with new shows by Alan Entin and David Turner.

Great article Scott! I am glad that you were able to cover both sides of the struggles of our downtown business owners, especially the debates on gentrification and long-time business owners (who often get overlooked in these articles).
