While I am not in the business of spreading rumor and innuendo, I am in the business of correcting false statements where I see them…and so far some of the blog responses to Joe's column are not based in fact.

To say ƒ?~we are not talking about Walmart — so stop making this out to be about the pending doom of Walmart moving into Carytown' demonstrates a lack of factual understanding. In essence, by approving the proposed zoning change to Special Use, any entity such as Whole Foods, Dollar Tree, Ross, TJ Maxx, and Walmart could occupy the current Verizon building space.

Let us remember the bigger issue is the zoning variance: the developer needs that in order to then build for/rent to whoever they want.

More importantly than Whole Foods vs. the THREE OTHER GROCERY STORES is the issue of retail versus office, for which the property is zoned.

      Don't "Big Box" My Carytown...

Understanding that this campaign was initiated by the same employer who has attempted to build his own empire of chains, and infiltrate neighborhoods in cities very far from the intersection of Ellwood and Thompson, makes this campaign extremely laughable.

It makes sense that Ellwood Thompson's would look to the the Carytown Merchant's Association, a coalition of capitalist with a lowercase "c", for allies in their struggle against a "big box" development. This, after all, is one of the fundamental roles of a merchants association.
