Almost upon arriving to Charlottesvile from St. Louis as a UVA law student in 1978, I began hearing about this amazing black attorney out of Richmond, who was reputedly not only well credentialed and skilled as an attorney. He was a stone cold black activist, whose very name was a bold statement: "Sa'ad El-Amin."

I wish for Sa'ad El_Amin to find the peace that his faith in Allah can provide. Rather than fighting the monuments and wallowing in the self-loathing of past forced servitude and the righteous anger and powerlessness of confronting the white power structure, I would love to see him focus on demanding that RICHMOND PUBLIC SCHOOLS STOP MAKING SO MANY DIRECT DEPOSITS IN THE CRADLE TO PRISON PIPELINE!

He could be a powerful advocate who could help make us all appreciate that ALL kids in this city matter.

I don't begrudge El-Amin his anger. I agree with Moeser, that he “sensitize(d) Richmond to the fact that there is a whole bunch of history that is absolutely offensive to the African-American community.” (whether it liked it or not!).
