This story and all of it comments actually suggest what is desparately needed is a new approach to education. We need to abandon the 19th century, industralized model of education in favor of a new information-centered form of education.

The father of one child who was accelerated in the RPS system (the Mom knew somebody downtown), later told me that he wished they had not gone that route since they had essentially lost a full year of their child's life at home, given that the child graduated from school a full year early.

Every parent needs to make decisions specific to their child, something that education policies, by their nature, rarely address.

From what I'm reading here, there is probably a good deal of public support for an acceleration-based gifted model, though not (I strongly suspect) as a replacement for the present enrichment model.

Parents need to fight for their kids' right to an appropriate education. Fortunately, there is light at the end of the educational tunnel.

Through tireless advocacy, my own daughter is successfully twice grade skipped and I have long advocated for specific, detailed policies and procedures for acceleration in public schools. Despite the negative/skeptical views of acceleration by most educators and parents, the documented benefits of acceleration for gifted children are overwhelming are in fact grounded in extensive research.
