      <![CDATA[<P>There is no more positive advocate of the VCU Jazz Program than Antonio Garcia.&nbsp; As &ldquo;Musical Nexus&rdquo; noted, and the nurturing presence of the university is absolutely central to the local scene (a &ldquo;musician magnet and pump that is the source of most of the players and a fair portion of the audience&hellip;&rdquo;)&nbsp; But,&nbsp; in the piece, the details of VCU policies, curricula and controversies were not &ldquo;overlooked&rdquo; but deliberately avoided.&nbsp; The focus was on the admirable cadre of young, post-college musicians who are building careers who are based Richmond but have far wider ambitions.</P> <P>Making a living in the arts has never been for the faint of heart.&nbsp; It is certainly not now, in the midst of a digital revolution that is rapidly dissolving the hierarchical old forms- record labels, distribution networks, broadcast networks- and replacing them with a chaotic mix of blogs, social networks, and DIY recording. Where there was once a solid if narrow path to success there is now an almost infinitely broad, largely unmapped and constantly changing competitive landscape.
