Add Europe to the list of continents that can officially hate Richmond.

Frederick “Toots” Hibbert had already cancelled his tour dates in North America after a local moron hit him in the head with a vodka bottle while he played a show on Brown’s Island in May. Yesterday Hibbert went ahead and cancelled all future performances, including a six-week European summer tour.…

by Andrew Cothern
One part music show and one part theatrical performance, the Rock and Roll Jubilee channels the spirits of music icons of the ’50s, including Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson. Presented in the context of a live, 1958 broadcast on fictitious WJKS radio, the show combines theatrical and comedic elements reminiscent of “Prairie Home Companion” and the Grand Ole Opry with the excitement of rock ’n’ roll.…

With the spirit of cooperation fading, City Council members attempt to get the mayor’s attention with money.
by Ned Oliver
This was supposed to be the City Council that worked with Mayor Dwight Jones to accomplish amazing, fantastic things. After all, the mayor's most vocal critics on council, Marty Jewell and Bruce Tyler, lost the November election to newcomers who were at least presumably more sympathetic with Jones' positions.…

Bringing something extra to the plate with a refined take on Mexican cuisine.
by Robey Martin
You know you're in the right spot on a Sunday night if you find yourself sitting next to the Giavos family of Kitchen 64, the Continental and others and Bob Talcott of Can Can Brasserie. That's how we found ourselves at Maya Mexican Grill and Tequila Lounge, a cute, airy restaurant tucked behind the movie theater in Short Pump.…

After delving into America's greatest family feud, bestselling author Dean King is helping revitalize a region.
by Brent Baldwin
The cracks of a rifle come from above, at least seven or eight shots in rapid succession. Bullets spray the Big Sandy River about 10 yards from where Dean King and his teenage daughter are standing.…

Developer H. Louis Salomonsky thought he'd figured out how to save $2.44 million in taxes on the 131-unit apartment complex he's building. By incorporating one side of an old 11-by-20-foot brick pump house into the foundation of his massive new building in Shockoe Bottom, as reported in Style Weekly, he planned to be exempted from $280,000 a year in taxes.…

Formed in 2008, Local Natives create a dramatic and eclectic blend of indie rock using lots of vocal harmonies and dreamlike melodies. The group’s first album, “Gorilla Manor,” debuted in the Billboard 200 and at No. 3 on the New Artist Chart.…

VCU's new medical education center excites with the work of a master modern architect.
by Edwin Slipek
So accuse me of name-dropping, but few American places can claim so impressive an architectural patrimony as the vicinity of East Broad and 12th streets. Foremost, there's Thomas Jefferson's State Capitol, currently starring in the PBS documentary "Ten Buildings that Changed America."…

Films take on new meaning when soundtracks are removed — or put back in. That’s the idea at the heart of the Silent Music Revival series, the monthly event that screens a classic, short silent movie while a local band plays music to accompany it.…

A new exhibit at the Poe Museum explores French love for the famous writer.

We assume we know Edgar Allan Poe. A lot of us, including Stephen King, vividly remember creepy scenes from macabre Poe stories such as "The Pit and the Pendulum."…

Pittsburgh-based theater company Miniature Curiosa explores childhood nostalgia with the eyeballs (and experience) of adulthood. Using low-fi technology, puppetry and nonlinear storytelling, the collective presents fast-moving, fast-talking, live-action comic-book storytelling.…

What does the Southern Foodways Symposium mean to the rest of us?
by Piet Jones
Most major food events seem overly commercial and repetitive, and that's the bias I brought to news that the Southern Foodways Alliance was bringing a symposium to Richmond this weekend. After all, the members-only event sold out long ago.…

Richmond composer D.J. Sparr translates the life of Muhammad Ali into music.
