Re: “First Black Restaurant Week Celebrates Key Contributions to the Local Dining Scene

Brandon,

Festivals promoting and celebrating the cuisines of different cultures have nothing to do with the issues being brought up by Ms. Lemon. The biggest food festival of the year, Broad Appetite, features just about every black owned place you can think of. Ms. Lemon comes across as someone blaming everything and everyone for the problems encountered by the people that venture into the restaurant biz - except, of course, the people that think opening and running a restaurant is so easy.

If someone gets into the restaurant business without knowing *everything* that needs to be known, they are being foolish and naive. Of all people, you know better than anyone that it's more than just about the food.

I have no problem whatsoever with celebrating a "Black Restaurant Week" - Just let's not start blaming others when a black owned restaurant goes under.

Re: “First Black Restaurant Week Celebrates Key Contributions to the Local Dining Scene

Sorry, but I need to counter many of Ms. Lemons assertions:

Most black cooks didnt go to culinary school, she says. They learned on the job. They dont feel like they can call themselves chefs.

- Most cooks, PERIOD, didn't go to culinary school and learned on the job. She also needs to learn the difference between a "chef" and a "cook". No one comes out of culinary school as a "chef".

Theres a major divide between black and white resources and education in the [dining] business.

- No one, but no one, is keeping blacks away from educating themselves in the culinary arts. Please refer to Stratford University's program. Sorry, but restaurants fail ALL THE TIME, regardless if they black or white owned and operated. Don't try to shift blame based on race.

"Black-owned restaurants have shorter life spans ..."

- Only if the food and service is not up to par. Croaker's, Mama J's, and the others have been around a good long time, and will continue to be around for years to come - as long as the food is great. I can name plenty of places that opened and closed within 1 year - Regardless of who owned them.

Plagiarism is a terrible thing. I hope this writer has learned the errors of her ways, and that good journalism, of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Re: “Best Place for Exotic Ingredients

Sally Byrd, I stand corrected ... Just got back from Grand Mart and found the goat. Funny, but in all the times Ive been there I've never shopped the frozen meat isle ... Always the fresh. Thanks for the heads up!

Re: “Best Place for Exotic Ingredients

Just to nit-pick a little: I've been shopping at New Grand at least twice a week since it opened, and I've never, ever seen goat for sale. Also, the live fish in the tanks are tilapia, *not* carp. Other than that, nice shout out to a fantastic market. Freshest fish I've ever bought in RVA, and their prices can't be beat. And as you say, prepare to spend some time ... I can't shop here without at least an hour of just browsing around.

LA's gain is RVA's loss ... Show 'em how it's done, DJ. Best of luck to you, See ya at the Grammys!

Re: “Speaking Up About the R-Word

Thank you for this article. I absolutely loath that word as much as any racial slur you can think of. It's a vile word and it's use says more about the ignorance and immaturity of the user than anything else. For what it's worth I have a "zero-tolerance" policy on it's use in any social media in which I am involved. Use it in a post and you are blocked. Period. I don't care *who* you are. If it's a "real-life" friend I'll also call them out on it personally.
