Re: “Full Circle

The event was canceled due to the threat of bad weather that day, not to allow more time to advertise.

Re: “Full Circle

So 100 people attending an event is a dismal failure? Not in my book. Particularly since the Mayor instructed the RMA to lock up all nearby parking - parking that has been wide open every day during the Redskins Training Camp with no attendants collecting money. Attendees were required to walk long distances after parking to reach the event. The Mayor is a coward and a bully.

Re: “Back on Base

What is the Richmond City Democratic Committee's financial interest/relationship with the Shockoe Bottom stadium proposal?

Re: “Shockoe Standoff

There are so many misrepresentations in this piece (including the claim about a "team of noted archaeologists"), but I will focus on one of them, which is repeated to convince the African-American community that this project will benefit it with contracts and jobs. Not necessarily the case. A SWaM (Small, Woman-owned and Minority) business is: 1) a business with fewer than 250 employees; OR 2) a business that is at least 51% owned by a woman; OR 3) a business that is at least 51% owned by one or more minority individuals (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic-American, etc.) Therefore, the Mayor can claim 40-percent minority participation and 20-percent minority ownership goals on the private (or public) development component - and, you guessed it - it is totally meaningless. Re: “Mayor Says His Stadium Proposal Is 'Not Dead'

During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, the City expended $ 56 million on principal and interest payments for its existing $ one BILLION of debt. I have read that the Mayor’s Shockoe Bottom stadium plan, at a bare minimum, includes $23 million in general obligation bonds for infrastructure alone. Buried deep within the City’s 2014-2015 budget are many, many millions of dollars obviously intended to go toward his project, on top of what has been publicized. Repeated claims that his project will not cost the taxpayers of Richmond anything are false. Creative financing, hidden within the Economic Development Authority, is still public debt. Municipal bonds are city debt that must be repaid. The Mayor’s pathetic deal with the Washington Redskins, and the grossly exaggerated claims about the Training Camp’s economic impact in 2013, do not lend his stadium project any credibility, as much as he would like us to believe otherwise.

Re: “Mayor Says His Stadium Proposal Is 'Not Dead'

I am a Richmond City resident and I pay many thousands of dollars each year in property taxes. I own - I do not rent. I do not want one dime of my taxes to go toward lining the pockets of the Mayor and his associates who stand to benefit from this project. I do not believe that one dime will go to the public schools or any other City infrastructure or service from any component of this project. I believe that any wise restaurant owner in the Bottom would not want a baseball stadium anywhere near his/her business. Claims that 7,000 baseball attendees 70 times every year will eat in restaurants in the Bottom - not going to happen. Claims that people driving to games will not impact/experience rush-hour traffic - false. I believe the debt associated with this proposed project would cripple Richmond's finances for the next 30 years and probably drive it into bankruptcy. The Mayor could care less - he won't be around to see it happen.
