Re: “Opting Out

If change is needed, parents must force it. It takes courage, but what of significance does not? The teachers are helpless, the administrators are helpless, the school boards don't have the power, the top echelon appears to be on a Vietnam-war-like path of " Stay the course. Stay the course. Just a few more tests, another round or two of tightening the thumbscrews and raising the bars, and all will be well." I don't think so. The testing tail is wagging the educational dog.

Ask yourself this : if all this testing and correlative cookie-cuttering of curriculum and methodology is so great, why haven't the private schools hopped all over it?

Re: “Caving In

Hats off to the courageous people responsible for this report. One strand in the RPS culture has been "Let's hide problems, because people would use their existence to bad-mouth us even more." Understandable thinking, but an inevitably losing strategy. Problems hidden are problems undealt with. Dirty laundry never gets cleaner when stuffed in a closet. It's not even a matter of getting it out and airing it. It's a matter of getting it out and WASHING it.

Re: “The Team of 10

I have the sense that we've got the right chemistry going on at the top in RPS. Sometimes it's all about the chemistry.
