Re: “Levar Stoney Locks in Victory as Richmond's 80th Mayor

Dear Editors (re Stoney neighborhood):

Thank you for the info.

Otherwise, no, I might not have seen an ad of his because a) I live in Charlottesville and b) I live in a self-drawn campaign ad-free zone.

But I do care deeply about Richmond affairs and could argue that I deserve some say in its fate. As a lifelong Virginian, I recognize Richmond as my Capital City. As a Virginia taxpayer, I know that some of my money contributes to Richmond's budget. I also know, of course, that state functions can get in Richmond City's way. (I've never forgotten getting to Library of Virginia on a day when I really needed to do some work and finding the parking garage closed off for exclusive use by the General Assembly.) And I'm also a Richmond alum. I've lived there while working for Commonwealth: the Magazine of Virginia and WCVW TV (coving City Council meetings). And I get back at least once a month to munch, shop, research, museum cruise, etc.

Again, thanks.

Re: “Levar Stoney Locks in Victory as Richmond's 80th Mayor

Wow. What a wobbly segue. For the record (though irrelevant to my reason for posting), I'm descended from at least half a dozen Confederate soldiers as is my husband, an ex-camp commander of a Sons of Confederate Veterans camp, and we both voted for Clinton (and for Obama twice) and are mourning the election results. Plus, we both love Richmond's city-wide sculpture garden and deplore attacks on it. But I digress....

I would just appreciate knowing where in Richmond thet next mayor actually lives. Nothing I've read or researched has yielded that piece of basic information.

Re: “Weekly Food Notes: Killer Ham Biscuits, Excellent Guacamole+Future Egg Rolls

I can't be the only person who has noticed that despite the headline, there is no mention in this post of ham biscuits "killer" or otherwise. Do tell, please. This is a truly important subject.

Re: “Blue Ridge Mountain Sports: A Lament

From my standpoint here in Charlottesville, the key to BRMS failure appears to have been the decision to move from its long time, high traffic site in Barracks Road Shopping Center to the difficult to get into and highly unappealing Shops at Stonefield. Think Mussolini modern or maybe a de Chirico painting without the warmth and charm. Going from a pleasantly packed space to one that could have been an airplane hanger made the relocated BRMS seem from the outset as if it was holding a going-out-of-business sale. Having a much better proportioned, interestingly decorated, etc. Orvis directly across the pretend like "street" didn't help. The two stores' inventories overlap in some categories. And having a very nice outfit -- Great Outdoor Provisions, a North Carolina based company with a back story remarkably similar to BRMS's -- go into its old Barracks Road site undoubtedly hurt. In fact, I'm sure lots of folks never noticed the changeover at Barracks Road. So what I see here is less a sign of the times than a particular company's particularly bad choices.

Re: “Seasonal Bliss

Saison Market carries "local...meat," does it? You could have fooled me. When I stopped in last week and asked about such, I got a blank look. Indeed, the nice guy behind the counter didn't even seem to comprehend my quest. "Meat," I said again crisply. Blank look. "M-E-A-T," I tried. Hesitation, then: "You mean deli meat, like what we have for sandwiches?" No, I said, I mean sausage. chops, whatever. Another blank look. So I tried sign language, i.e. I walked to the window and pointed to the word "MEAT" handsomely engraved alongside "BEER" and "WINE" and such. “Oh,” said nice, guy, “I guess that's a work in progress.”

Oh..... Folks, do please do your homework.

Re: “Mouth-Watering

Can't imagine why you haven't specifically mentioned the extraordinary Beast Feast. What a great event.
