What an evening of contrasts. We started last Friday evening at the Viceroy and later met friends at Acacia Midtown. The staff at the Viceroy were just as friendly and engaging as we’ve experienced in the past. We had a drink and shared several appetizers. As we were getting ready to leave friends called and asked if we would like to meet at Acacia Midtown.

At Acacia, we were seated at at the bar as our friends arrived. The bar was fairly quite. As we arrived the two people to our left moved to their table. The only other people at the bar were two women seated at the far end. We generally set at the bar, usually finding it to be more friendly and social.

My friend and I ordered bottle of Tempranillo and our friends ordered drinks and reviewed the menu. As they ordered food, we decided to sample the Seared Tuna. At that time we were asked if we wanted to move to a table. We unanimously declined. Then the Bartender, who we were told later was a manager, informed us that the policy was that they do not serve four people at the bar. My reply was “then we’ll just have the wine”. The Bartender made some condescending remark regarding that it’s to protect the bar for those patrons that that would like to drink and not being able to set. We suggested that we could move if others arrived, he declined. I then mentioned that another option would be that we could simply get the check and go somewhere else to eat. The Bartender replied that “if that is what you prefer, let it be done”. We then moved to a table, as I no longer wanted to be served by such a smug and arrogant bartender.

Since we were seated, we all ended up ordering food, the Seared Tuna was visually pleasant but completely without flavor. My friends’ Chicken entrée was over-salted but equally attractive. I do understand that food that is visually pleasing enhances the taste but it cannot overcome mediocre food regardless of what you want to believe.

The waitress was doing her best to hurry us along, removing two of our four wine glasses with wine still in the glasses. During our meal, we noticed that not a single person sat at the bar. The only two patrons at the bar during our meal were the two women, still seated at the end of the bar.

I do not have an issue with the policy in general. I’ve too have experienced a bar full of people eating entrées, avoiding the wait for a table, when you want to grab a drink at a friendly bar. However, I do believe it’s best to apply some discretion when applying policies. The four of us sitting and enjoying drinks at the bar and having appetizers would have generated greater revenue than moving us to a table. Especially considering that it was my friend’s first visit and most likely the last for the four of us.
