Freestanding is a term used in this context to denote a clear separation of childrens and adult service lines in separate buildings. In that way, childrens services are paramount, and the entity has its own identity in the community. Many Children's Hospitals are adjacent but clearly separate. Some like Cincinnati #3 stands alone (but nearby) and Pittsburgh #8 and Nationwide #11 are over 5 miles away from their affiliated systems. There are numerous models and no 2 are alike. We need to find a way to create the best facility for our kids within our own set of realities. Keith Derco MD, vice chair of the PACK
