This is an exhibit not to be missed. What a sad story accompanies this exhibit! China wants the world to think it is open and yet these photographs had to be smuggled out of the country to be shown in the West! Thank you for the article. The opening with a panel discussion about Liu Xia and her art was truly a gift. Emma Lou Martin
Re: “They Make Arts Districts, Don't They?”
West Main Street...A great arts district with unique galleries...Of special note is Uptown Gallery at 1300 between Randolph and Brunswick. It was begun by the Metropolitan Artists Association 20 years ago under the direction of Emma Lou Martin and Stuart White as a Richmond area co-op gallery. Through the month of April Emma Lou Martin is featured with George Crawford. Here you can see the micro/macro views of nature with George's landscapes in oil and Emma Lou's collages of bits and pieces from the natural world including snake skins, feathers, and plant materials on hand-made papers, including African elephant dung paper! Also at Uptown, through April is a show by artists from the newly formed Virginal Pastel Society.
