Thanks for this article. Why not use a term like "undocumented" instead of "illegal," though? Selective use of "illegal" essentializes “illegality” as the defining characteristic of an individual or group’s identity. We would not call a speeding driver an "illegal driver." Use of the i-word thus creates “illegal” people. This marginalizes individuals or groups from “legal” society—something especially dangerous in the US, which (arguably) holds its written law as its supreme moral standard.
