Re: “Letter: In Firehouse Controversy, Time to Come Together

Ms. Dray, Mr. Timberline, a veteran of Richmond theatre, hit the nail on the head. In this instance, there was nothing to celebrate in what the board did to Carol Piersol. It truly was a screwing. One can hardly give respect to an executive board of directors who has behaved in the egregious, imperious manner that this executive committee and its followers on the general board have behaved. There was no due process afforded Carol Piersol who founded FTP 19 years ago and was Artistic Director until December. But, a great deal of consideration was given to the managing director hired with little if any theatre background, and who was hired by the Holmes - Kennedy group in September, 2 months prior to this action. The board has not worked "hand in hand" with anyone but themselves. One can give NO respect to a board of directors whose leadership says artist directors and actors are a "dime a dozen." Why would the high and mighty board dirty their hands by touching one of us artist-types let alone "hold hands?" And, one can hardly call the board theatre "administrators." That is not their function. Board members should really know about theatre in order to administer one. They have shown they know very little in that department. Their greatest creativity seems to lie in obfuscating to cover their own bad decisions and in fabricating to rectify their public relations debacle. The sooner they, and their minions move on, the better. The health of FTP and the theatre community in Richmond depends on their making this right decision. They can look like heroes if they do and make a disaster look like a triumph.
