Re: “More to Treegate: No One Mentions $15 Million Exhibits?

"WhatsWrongSMV?'s" information is a bit different from what I heard in December from SMV staff working on the project, but there are probably a few ways to get an SR-71 inside the building. My question is why do it at all? As far as the building wall goes, the plans clearly show changes ahead to the structure (see the people passing through the wall in the rendering above). Personally, I rather like the architectural plans... its the exhibit content that seems all wrong. (IMHO)

Re: “More to Treegate: No One Mentions $15 Million Exhibits?

Answer: They will have to tear down the wall to get the SR-71 inside (and remove the SR-71 from the Virginia Aviation Museum to boot). The disposition of the steam plant and the Aluminaut submarine exhibit are both unclear, and I haven't seen anything on these subjects yet. Other renderings of the "Speed" exhibit I've seen show the SR-71 and a NASCAR racing vehicle as central icons of the exhibit. The early renderings show an exhibit that appears tone deaf to me - the museum's backward focus on icons of conspicuous fuel consumption seems really wrong for an institution that should be looking forward towards an energy sustainable future. This may be mostly about a former fighter pilot, now museum director pushing a personal agenda (boys and their toys). There are some good people working on this at the museum though, and I hope they will be able to salvage what looks like a seriously flawed plan. Until then, I'm hoping that potential funders of this proposed exhibit will find more worthy projects to fund.
