Re: “Burning Down the House

I, Dave Lawrence, resolve to not support the Firehouse Theatre Project in any way until the founding artistic director, Carol Piersol is reinstated as artistic director, and pending the resignation of the parties responsible for her hasty and unjust dismissal. I will not create work, attend a performance, volunteer, or donate to or in support of this space until this wrong has been righted. -- If you are an artist (supporter, ticket-buyer, donor, student, technician, et al), donor, sponsor, or patron, please join with us in posting this.

Re: “Firehouse Theatre Turns Hose on Itself

Dear David Wells,

First, thank you for having the courage to put your name on your posts. That is a refreshing change from what we've seen from most defenders of the board here.

The vote to remove Carol took place after considerable coercion by the executive committee, after key information was withheld by the executive committee from the board, and after one board member who openly supported Carol was expelled -- for doing what you suggested someone should have been doing, which was informing her what was going on. The vote, then, did not take place under an atmosphere that fosters dispassionate deliberation over the future of any organization.

Also keep in mind that some board members have actively tried to suppress attendance at an event to support Carol -- dishonorable behavior such as this calls into question all of the board's conduct related to this matter.

As a businessman, you should know that vindictively attacking critics is not a terribly effective way to promote positive relations among your customers.

Also, as a businessman, you know that in order to stay afloat, you have to have a good product or service to sell. Carol's record speaks for itself. We would not have witnessed the reaction to her dismissal if she had not been so effective at developing that good product the past 20 years.

Do you think a board so skilled at business matters could have done such an expert job of demolishing the good name of the Firehouse in a matter of days, as this one has?

I hope for a peaceful resolution, but much of what this board has accomplished in the past two weeks is indefensible.

Sincerely,

David M. Lawrence

While I do think Joe should flesh out his bio a bit here, I thought I'd offer a link to his long list of amateur acting credits: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0409367/?ref_=f…

Re: “No Piersol, No Peace

Dear outsider,

Obviously you have never worked in a professional setting. I've been a professional for decades. In the best work environments, I have been allowed and expected to fight passionately for what I believe is right. In the worst, I was encouraged to shut up and be happy that someone as important as my overseers allowed me to toil on their oh so valuable soil.

Well, the theatrical community -- which includes professionals as well as fans such as myself -- is standing up and fighting for what is right, and that is what makes Richmond such a fascinating and vibrant home for the arts. I and many like-minded people prefer to man the barricades rather than resign ourselves to be serfs.

Sincerely,

David M. Lawrence

P.S. Crazies? The only crazies I see are the pseudonymous posters trying to shut the rest of us -- who have courage in our convictions -- up.

Re: “No Piersol, No Peace

Thank you, another pseudonymous defender of the board.

Mean spirited? Really?

Answer these two questions:

1) If the board was so nobly, why was someone acting on the board's behalf deleting comments supporting Carol from the Facebook page?

2) Again, if the board was acting so nobly, why were two board members contacting other arts organizations in an effort to derail Saturday's rally to support Carol?

The board has acted as if it had something to hide -- to protect itself, not Carol.

I await your answers to these two questions.

Sincerely,

David M. Lawrence

Re: “No Piersol, No Peace

Dear Tired of it All:

Who are you? Where do you get your "facts?"

Carol did not encourage me to establish the Facebook page I established. I did it myself after watching the board try to eliminate any evidence of opposition on its Facebook page. That suggested to me that the board wasn't interested in anything but getting its own way -- just as presenting an ultimatum to Carol was a clear indication that they really didn't want her around, they offered a meaningless position to her in the hopes that it would buy silence.

Let me be clear: if a Firehouse insider had not started deleting comments, I would never have taken time from my incredibly busy schedule to create my Facebook page.

And please, don't delude yourself into thinking you and your cowardly anonymous sniping has contributed anything to a solution. I would argue that, if the board is in any way inclined to negotiate now, it was precisely because the vigorous reaction by Carol's supporters forced it to realize it may have screwed up, not because people like you showed your lack of courage, conviction, and class on forums like this.

I will love it if a solution can be found that restores Firehouse to some semblance of the happy place it was before the board ousted Carol.

But the burden of proof is on the board and its supporters like you -- and so far, I don't see anything in your writing that inspires my good faith.

Sincerely,

David Meade Lawrence

Re: “No Piersol, No Peace

Grow a pair and state your name, Over It.

In this day of digital fakery, we know of too many incidents of people faking identities online to write glowing reviews of themselves or to attack critics. (You should read the SourceWatch entry on John Lott, so-called gun violence expert and author of "More Guns, Less Crime" for examples of this. The entry is at http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title…)

No one in the public arena should take you and the other pseudonymous posters seriously unless are willing to back up you claims with your identity.

Sincerely,

David Meade Lawrence
