Re: “Bike Bliss

Stop right there - traffic circles do NOT make travelling safer for bikers OR pedestrians. Traffic circles make the road LESS SAFE for both, and particularly less safe for children and the elderly. They also SLOW emergency vehicles by an estimated 10 seconds per circle and seconds save lives! These narrow fan streets are NOT DESIGNED for traffic circles anyway. One was installed in our near West End neighborhood and it is an eyesore, the neighborhood association did NOT give approval, the traffic circle was NOT built to standard design requirements, and it has not provided any safer conditions on the roadways. Studies have shown that most traffic circles just cause drivers to redirect to neighboring streets, increasing traffic and speeds on those roadways.

Re: “Raising the Roof

The UR Alumni Office held what we dubbed the "ultimate moving party" which began before sunrise on the morning of of the move. I had the privilege of chairing the event. Not only was the university moving a massive structure but the date continually moved as the Matyiko Brothers waited for the perfect weather and soil conditions. The crowd of nearly 4,000 cheered as the historic home crossed River Road, then made its way across the practice fields to its final location by College Road. A bottle of Jepson champagne, which rested safely on the doorstep of the mansion throughout the journey, was opened in celebration at the conclusion of move. I knew that event would be nearly impossible to top. Now that amazing home is shared with thousands every year who are able to admire Bottomley's architecture outside AND inside - something that is nearly impossible with those homes in private hands.
